About the Role

Some pupils in Years 5 to 13 are waiting for a tutor. If you could give an hour or so a week, you could help one of them with Maths, Science or English, one-to-one and online, from your own room on your own laptop. Most volunteers give about an hour a week. You can offer more or less, and change it whenever you like. Lessons follow the same plans and materials our paid tutors use, so you are not starting from a blank page.

You could be a university student, a graduate or someone who enjoys explaining things. Subject knowledge matters most in Maths, Biology, Chemistry, Physics and English, for GCSE and A-level. Weekday early evenings and weekend afternoons are the busiest times, if those could work for you.

NSEMM pays for your enhanced DBS check. We take references, and everyone completes safeguarding training before a first lesson. This is a volunteer role: we do not pay volunteers beyond reasonable, evidenced expenses.

You are welcome to ask us anything first at [email protected].

The National Society for Education, Mentoring and Media is a charitable incorporated organisation, a registered charity in England and Wales, no. 1209673.

Key Responsibilities

  • We hope you could meet your pupil online for about an hour a week, at a time that suits you both, if you can.
  • We hope you could help them with the subject they need, using the plans and materials we share with you.
  • We hope you could tell us after a lesson about anything that is worth passing on.
  • If you are ever worried about a pupil, we hope you would tell our safeguarding team the same day. We will always help you with how.

Requirements

  • Aged 16 or over. If you are under 18, a parent or guardian gives their consent before you start.
  • Good knowledge of at least one subject we tutor (Maths, Sciences, English or Computer Science) at the level you would like to teach.
  • A laptop or computer with a camera, a reliable internet connection and somewhere quiet to teach from.
  • An enhanced DBS check (NSEMM pays for it), references, and safeguarding training before a first lesson.
  • Contact with pupils only through the NSEMM platform, never personal phone numbers or social media.

What you could gain

  • Free training in safeguarding and in tutoring online, in our online HR app.
  • Experience of one-to-one teaching, and something real to talk about in applications and interviews.
  • A reference, if you ask for one.
  • Your reasonable, evidenced expenses repaid. We do not pay volunteers beyond expenses.

All team members enjoy access to Canva Pro and a range of other premium apps to support both your professional development and personal use.
